Introduction:
If society reveals anything about the family it’s the importance of a good mother in the home.
There is such a bond and connection to the mothers that it almost indestructible. Even when the father is absent from the home the mother is there taking care of the kids. There are many more single moms than there are single dads. (If you are a single dad here this morning I will get to you in a month when we have father’s day. )
Our community recognizes the importance of the mother in the by granting custody to mother if at all possible. The Father has to fight for custody and sometimes needs too.
Mothers make the world go round. They have the ability to run a business and run the house at the same time. There are so many demands on a mom that they earn instant respect for all they do for others. That list is too long for me to list out here.
When the Christian community tries to describe the blessedness of a wife and mother they turn to .
Prov
The book of Proverbs begins with a challenge from a Father to a son to walk in the wisdom of the Lord and not to engage in foolishness. This set up the entirety of the book as it is a constant comparison of the wise and the foolish.
The book ends with a proverb that King Solomon learned from his Mother in .
Proverbs 31:
1 The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him:
Solomons Mother was Bathsheba, the wife of David and Uriah the Hitite.
As every good mother does, she warns him about women, wine, and words in verses 2-9.
Then she breaks out a poem for her son. You might not have known that “The Virtuous Woman” is an acrostic poem with each verse beginning with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Poems and sonnets were written to help with memorization.
Bathsheba would have expected her son to memorize the words of this sonnet to guide and direct his life. That is why he says in verse one “An oracle that his mother taught him.”
The woman is not a real person but rather a list of virtues to look for in a wife and mother.
I want to focus in on one of these virtues this morning for Mothers day.
25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
Proverbs 31:
27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
Proverbs 31:27-29
This would be the same wisdom talked about in the rest of Proverbs which is the wisdom from God’s Word.
I was always impressed with Kim when I would go by the girls rooms at night and Kim was teaching them memory verses. Those are things the girls still remember and hold dear about their Mom. she spoke and continues to speak wisdom into their lives.
Being a Mother is not always easy. Proverbs also talks a lot about the sorrow, shame, and bitterness that can come from being a mom.
1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.
Proverbs
Prov 29:
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.
Proverbs
25 A foolish son is a grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him.
25 Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.
Proverbs
“Wisdom is valuable even when fools won’t receive it.”
“Wisdom is valuable even when fools won’t receive it.”
Questions to ask yourself as a Mother:
Questions to ask yourself as a Mother:
Am I giving out and living out wisdom in front of my children?
Do my actions measure up to the wisdom I speak?
Do I love unconditionally even when the wisdom is not received?

Many parents, me included, have gone through raising a wayward son or daughter. What feeling did you go through personally when during some of those times?

How did these situation either draw you close to God or push you away? I guess I’m asking how was your faith during those trying times?

As a Christian Mom, what was the game plan that you came up with to help and encourage your son?
Did you feel like Gregg was hearing or receiving the wisdom you were so faithful to give him?
What kind of support system did you have at that time if any?
Now that you are on the other side of the trial and Gregg is in ministry and servicing the Lord, what advise would you give to the Moms or parents that might find themselves in that situation right now?
Is there anything you would like to add before I let you go?
